- <p> Here in the States, Feminists argue that beauty pageants represent
- an insidious objectification of women. A recent contest held
- in South Africa has sent tempers flaring there too, but hardly
- for the same reason. The crowning of JACQUI MOFOKENG, 21, as
- the first black Miss South Africa caused hundreds of white citizens
- to phone radio stations and newspapers angrily protesting the
- choice and insisting that the voting must have been rigged.
- Judges in the contest were adamant that Mofokeng deserved the
- honor. And she insisted, "I'm going to win the hearts of all
- South Africans."
